To be honest, beforehand I thought that they are making too much fuss about a movie who features a street kid (=slumdog) and his appearance on the Indian version of the “Who wants to be a Millionaire” show. But the movie is so much more. It’s about an orphan child and his elder brother, about a girl who becomes his destiny, about surviving under extreme circumstances, about crime and love and chances.
After the two hours I felt stiff and my muscles hurt and my head was red. Yes, this fuss about is just right because you get engaged and tense and fall into this realistic fairy tale. It is a powerful movie, which will entertain you tremendously. Good guys and bad guys, but all with a twist, and good choices and bad ones, believe and hope and love and optimism versus orphans and poverty and enslavement and crime, you get it all, and I even hungered for the next “Millionaire question” because this show is just an intelligent vehicle to tell a very tense story. And yes, it’s kind of a “Rocky” story. “It’s only over when it’s over” is the same attitude the hero Jamal Malik has, no matter what, he will never give up and therefore we all wish that all his dreams come true. Two thumbs up!
